Smallville: Starring Supergirl
Recent promotional material for the seventh season of the CWs superhero action drama series Smallville heavily features the new Supergirl named Kara, played by Canadian actress Laura Vanderwoort. However, since most of the promos seem to feature only her rather than any other cast members, some fans have begun to speculate how much focus will be given to the Kryptonian female, especially with the rumors that this season will be the swan song for the series. Add to that the departure of one of the shows longest and most popular cast members from the regular lineup, Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, and it seems as if the focus on Kara is an attempt to get viewers hooked on a new character â “ seemingly one with curvaceous sex appeal, if cynics are to be believed.
Other possible plot threads that will supposedly take place during the seventh season still involve Luthor, with Rosenbaum guest-starring and reprising his role. Also featured will be the activities of Jimmy, a potential disagreement and dispute with the Martian Manhunter, and Clarks own interactions with Kara. Some have stated that her appearance in the series seems forced, however, rather than being smoothly integrated into the shows own unique mythology.
To put it more bluntly, as the cynics have said, it seems to be an attempt to pander to a certain demographic which appreciates Kryptonian curves â “ young men and the stereotypical image of a lusty, undersexed comic book fan. People shouldnt be so quick to put down the character, however â “ throughout the years in the DC comics universe, Supergirl has held her own and enjoyed a respectable amount of fan devotion, from the Golden Age of the 50s-60s to her own feature film in the 80s. One issue that may boggle new fans is how many versions of her there are running around in the DC universe, especially the infamously buxom Power Girl.
